How to... Network Your Way to the Top
Whatever your position in the world of HR and payroll, networking can help you broaden your knowledge, expand your opportunities and increase your career prospects.
However, not everyone is a natural ‘Networker’. Here are some key points to get you thinking about your networking style and how you can increase your success:
- Don’t be afraid. Most people aren’t natural networkers and will really appreciate you starting a conversation with them.
- Identify your goals before entering a networking situation. Your networking will be much more effective if you know what you are hoping to achieve.
- Look approachable. Don't cross your arms or stare at the floor. Be prepared with opening questions if someone catches your eye.
- Find a common point of interest. The sooner you establish this the more comfortable the conversation will become.
- Ask open-ended questions. Why? Where?. This form of questioning opens up the discussion and shows listeners that you are interested in them.
- Have a clear understanding of what you do and why. In order to make useful contacts, you must first have a clear understanding of what you do that you can easily articulate to others.
- Always carry business cards. You never know when you might need them.
- Don’t assume. Never assume someone is new if you haven’t seen them before or that they will remember you if you have met before. Use opening lines such as ‘I’m not sure we’ve met before?’.
- Finally, but most importantly, relax and enjoy yourself!
So now you’re all set to start networking, keep an eye on Ceridian’s Events page for upcoming conferences and seminars you can attend to start filling that contact’s diary.
