Senior managers not concerned about employees using own cars for work
— 01 March 2007 —
A new report has revealed that 35% of HR and finance directors do not think that employees driving their own cars for work is a cause for concern.
But the study by LeasePlan also revealed that of the 150 finance and HR directors questioned, 89% rated driver safety and corporate liability as a key issue.
Under current legislation, companies are deemed legally responsible for the condition and safety of all vehicles used for work-related journeys, regardless of whether they are company or privately-owned cars. HM Revenue & Customs estimates that around three million people use privately-owned vehicles for business journeys.
The report comes on the back of research by the Local Authority Road Safety Officers' Association (LARSOA), which estimates that as many as a third of all road accidents may involve someone who was at work at the time of a collision. It also points to estimates which suggest that there are between 860 and 1130 deaths on the roads each year which may be work-related.
Ceridian's HR Head, Jo Jobson says: "The impact of looking after our employees’ travel is a considerable one from a compliance perspective. But companies should consider it as important for more than just compliance reasons"
It’s just good practice to look after the health and wellbeing of your employees – and this applies especially to the use of private cars for work purposes, both in terms of employee wellbeing as well as in terms of public safety.
