Disgruntled job-seekers become brand bashers

20 March 2007

Job-seekers who receive short shrift from potential employers can become brand bashers, according to the results of a new survey.

A YouGov poll has revealed that 53% of job seekers will not purchase products and services if they have been badly treated by a potential employer.

Of the 2,500 people surveyed, 55% said they will tell at least three other people about their bad experience and 24% will tell more than six people. However a small but significant one per cent will go as far as blogging their bad experiences on the Internet.

The main gripe of job seekers is the lack of communication from potential employers with 53% feeling aggrieved that no reason was given for not being offered a job.

A lack of feedback following an interview was the main irritation of 51% of respondents, and 49% said no acknowledgment of their application was annoying.

A spokesperson for the company that carried out the research said a good employer brand is increasingly critical to an organisation’s commercial success and if they treat people poorly during the recruitment process, not only could they lose them as customers, but they run the risk of them telling others about their bad experience.

Here at Ceridian, we want our recruitment process to be supportive, and to give everyone the chance to do their best. To achieve that, we do all we can to make this process as enjoyable and transparent as possible.Elanie Kruger, Head of Talent, Ceridian UK Ltd.
