Employers warned that tax deadline is looming

11 May 2007

The tax man is urging employers to beat the looming deadline and file their tax returns as soon as possible.

The call comes as a reminder to employers who have yet to file their 2006-07 Annual Return as they need to do so by 19 May. But HMRC points out that this year, the 19th falls on a Saturday so most companies will only realistically have until Friday 18 to get their forms in on time.

The director of HMRC's Employer Programme, Don MacArthur, said the last thing he wants is for employers to file late and receive a penalty. The sooner we get the information, he added, the sooner we can process it.

He advised that the best way to beat the deadline is to file the returns online as the internet offers the opportunity to file 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Online filing, he said, provides employers with the quickest and easiest way to file their return. And, for employers with fewer than 50 employees who file a valid return online, there is a £150 tax-free payment available. Employers with 50 or more employees must file their returns online.

Mr MacArthur said help and advice on employer filing is available on the HMRC website at www.hmrc.gov.uk/payeonline. They can also call the HMRC Employer Helpline on 08457 143 143.

Ceridian has offered automated P14 electronic filing services though EDI for its payroll service clients for the past eight years (used by over 7,000 employers for over 2 million employees). The service also extends to in-Year filing of P45, P46 and the receipt of tax code and student loan messages, increasingly important with employers having to consider their options for when in-year filing obligations apply in the future.
