In-house training could lead to nationally recognised qualifications

19 September 2007

An initiative has been launched that would see in-house training lead to nationally recognised qualifications.

John Denham, the Innovation, Universities and Skills secretary, said at the CBI Skills Summit that a consultation process had been launched to allow employers to engage directly with the national qualification scheme. He acknowledged that the training offered by many employers was of a very high standard, and deserves greater recognition.

“We want to end the outdated distinction between employers’ training and public qualifications”, said Denham. “By bringing qualifications and skills closer than even before, business, employees and the state will all benefit.”

Denham’s priority is to create a “truly demand-led, responsive system”, and has written to all heads of further education colleges in England, detailing the government’s priorities. By channelling more money through Skills Accounts to colleges and through the Train to Gain programme for employers, Denham hopes to shape the skills system to meet employer requirements.

This is an excellent idea. Having spent many years designing and delivering in-house training, it would have been great if it had led directly or indirectly to a nationally recognised qualification.Amanda Young, Head of Training & Development, Ceridian
