Charity starts with HR

2 January 2008

HR specialists, along with management consultants, are more willing than other professions to help charitable organisations.

Research carried out by people4charity.com shows that HR experts offer greater discounts to charities when dealing with them. Almost 40% of the freelance HR professionals surveyed said that they were prepared to offer a 15% cut to the charity sector, while finance and accounting professionals came bottom of the league.

“The dichotomy here is an interesting one - HR professionals have a human, caring aspect to their roles whilst finance and accounting professionals are possibly less likely to give as they may have concerns about the amount of money going into public sector organisations and may see charity as the abdication of the state from its responsibilities.

“With £100 billion going into NHS-specific support for research and hospices, charities may wane as more people become convinced of the need for the State to provide prevention and support rather than purely cure - this has been a Government theme over the festive period,” comments Paul Avis.

With management consultants and freelance lawyers proving to be as charitable as HR professionals, Duncan Taylor of people4charity.com said: “What is noteworthy from this research is that giving to charity through skills is on the increase among freelance workers.”
