Recruitment agencies warned over fraudster
— 10 March 2008 —
Recruitment agencies have been warned to be on the lookout for a fraudster who has swindled over £300,000 already.
City of London Police claim that this amount may just be the tip of the iceberg as several City firms have reported falling victim to the fraudster – others may still come forward.
The fraud involves a fake foreign company which contacts an agency asking for a temporary worker with a specific skill set. The agency then receives a CV from someone matching that particular skill set – often including languages – and the job match is made. When the recruitment agency pays the worker and sends the invoices, the agency is not reimbursed.
DC Kevin Ives said that the City of London Police “is aware that this fraud has cost some recruitment companies significant sums of money. We want to warn others so they can avoid becoming victims and encourage the industry to ensure robust vetting procedures and ID checks are carried out on new clients.”
Recruitment agencies have been asked to check their records and be vigilant for names such as Antonio Almeda (or variants) Bero or Berodo Venturi, and the company names ‘Myers and Myers’ and ‘hhi tekno’.
