UK Business not green enough

16 June 2008

Go Green At WorkThe TUC is pushing the government to make greater efforts to make Britain’s economy greener. In “A Green and Fair Future: For a Just Transition to a Low Carbon Economy”, the TUC sets out its vision for a green sector along the lines of that created in Germany.

“Our European competitors are showing that there is a lot of money and jobs in the green economy, but the UK Government is barely off the starting blocks compared to countries like Germany and Denmark”, said TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber. “Now is the time to start implementing the policies which could allow a UK Green Sector to give a much-needed boost to our slowing economy.”

Germany’s renewable energy sector employs almost 500,000 people with a turnover of 24bn euros. The UK, however, employs just 7,000 people at a turnover of just 360 million euros.

The TUC paper claims that the UK has to start implementing policies that will make the UK a world leader in the new green economy. The paper itself will be launched today at a conference addressed by the Environment Secretary Hilary Benn MP.

The TUC will also publish a free guide, “Go Green at Work”, aimed at employees who want to make their workplace a greener place to work. The guide is available at http://www.tuc.org.uk/extras/gogreenatwork.pdf.
