Report reveals how small business is affected by driving offences
— 25 November 2009 —
A report published by Enterprise Rent-A-Car has unveiled a shocking culture of driving offences in company cars.
In the last six months, almost one in three employees driving a vehicle for work committed an offence. Half of the offences were speeding, while a quarter of those found comitting an offence were under the influence of drink or drugs. Amazingly, one in ten of these offences was due to the wrong type of insurance.
Small businesses are likely to be the worst affected, with fines for inappropriate insurance and vehicles being taken off the road, severely hampering business performance.
Enterprise Rent-a-Car's Rob Ingram commented: "They [...] need to be clear about what their drivers' insurance actually covers. A lot of drivers use their cars for work without the appropriate business insurance. This can result in significant fines and time lost for small businesses with drivers off the road."
Employers are being urged to carry out regular reviews of company vehicles, insurance and vehicle safety. While it is the employee's responsibility to drive sensibly and legally, it is the employer's responsibility to ensure that the vehicle is fit for the road, and not that of the employee.
