Top 10 HR Tips
Ten Tips for HR professionals for a more productive, engaged and successful 2007!
Have you kept to your New Year’s resolutions so far? If one of them is to be more productive and engaged at work, read on for our 10 HR tips for a successful 2007.
Learn more about your business
HR is an integral part of your company, as you work directly with all the people in your company. By ensuring that you understand all your business's future plans and strategies, you're also ensuring that the work you do really makes a difference.
Innovate
Don't feel you always have to do things the same way. New technology and new services available to you allow you to re-organise the way your team works and save money or provide a better service to employees. Investigate options such as self-service or online recruitment and find out how they can work for your business.
Stay compliant
With changes to maternity & paternity legislation, evolving pensions law and the continued impact of last October's anti-discrimination regulation, 2007 is set to be a busy year for HR and payroll professionals. By setting aside some of your time each month to keep up with changes, it's easy to keep up to date and ensure you're compliant.
Get more from your suppliers
If you're planning on introducing efficient or new initiatives, such as an EAP, self service or flexible benefits, it's a good idea to talk to your suppliers. They should be able to help you as they know best what similar organisations have done, and what options are available to you.
Blow your own trumpet
HR teams typically make a huge contribution to the success of the business, but don't always get as much credit as functions such as Finance or Sales. Change this in 2007 by raising your profile; enter for an award, use your Intranet or newsletter to shout about HR's achievements or nominate your employees for internal recognition schemes.
Invest in your career
When you're busy with the job you do today, it's easy to let long-term career goals slip. Take time out to think about what you'll need from your career for the year ahead
and schedule an activity such as training, coaching or mentoring that will help you achieve your goals.
Build your network
Increasing your business network, both within your company and externally, will help you to build knowledge, opportunities and profile. Think about who you already know and ask them to introduce you to useful new people, ask for meetings with senior leaders in your business and try to fit at least one event, such as a seminar, user group meeting or business breakfast into your diary each month.
Control your time
Think about your working week on a Monday and plan your time so you can achieve what you need to. Set realistic deadlines and stick to them. If others come to you with unexpected demands, be accommodating but don't take on work you can't achieve. Agree timescales that work for you.
Stamp out stress
For HR and payroll professionals exposed to concerns of others as well as the pressures of their own work, stress can build up quickly. Learn to recognise the physical signs of stress, such as headaches, a raised voice or stomach pains and respond. Take five minutes away from your desk, ideally outside, and take some deep breaths while you calm down and think rationally about the situation. If you're repeatedly in stressful situations, flag the issue with your manager and ask for a meeting to work out a solution.
Enjoy yourself
Finally, the best way to get more out of work is to find ways to enjoy yourself. Organise social occasions in the office, be creative and try new ways of working, start competitions and reward schemes for your team and celebrate success!
