Government employment initiative receives support from businesses

Employers boost statistics

Recent figures show that employment levels have reached employment initiative nets over 100 major employersa record level of 29.1 million, with the number of vacancies being advertised reaching the high figure of 668,800.

Businesses across the country are continuing to look at how they can bring people into the workplace. The Government’s Local Employment Partnerships (LEPs) scheme aims to address unemployment, and has successfully had over 100 major employers commit themselves to fast-tracking long-term benefit claimants into work. Among these socially aware companies are Ceridian clients like ASDA and Marks & Spencer.

Prime Minister Gordon BrownPrime Minister Gordon Brown has also backed the initiative, saying employers have an important role to play in getting the most disadvantaged people into work. The PM says that now more than ever, it will be the employees who will be the creators of the intellectual capital, productivity and competitiveness it takes for businesses to succeed.

Businesses who have committed themselves to the DWP’s process will be recruiting creatively by:

  • offering work trials to local benefit claimants
  • liaising with Jobcentre Plus and the Learning Skills Council on pre-employment training, ensuring relevance to employers’ needs, and guaranteeing interviews or jobs to those who complete the training
  • Reviewing application processes

Record employment statistics

The labour force survey statistics below cover June to August 2007.

  • 29.1 million people were in work from June to August, the highest figure on record
  • Employment rose by 22,000 on the quarter and 82,000 on the year
  • The employment rate is 74.4%, down 0.1% on the quarter and down 0.3% on the year.
