Government employment initiative receives support from businesses
Employers boost statistics
Recent figures show that employment levels have reached
a record level of 29.1 million, with the number of vacancies being advertised reaching the high figure of 668,800.
Businesses across the country are continuing to look at how they can bring people into the workplace. The Government’s Local Employment Partnerships (LEPs) scheme aims to address unemployment, and has successfully had over 100 major employers commit themselves to fast-tracking long-term benefit claimants into work. Among these socially aware companies are Ceridian clients like ASDA and Marks & Spencer.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has also backed the initiative, saying employers have an important role to play in getting the most disadvantaged people into work. The PM says that now more than ever, it will be the employees who will be the creators of the intellectual capital, productivity and competitiveness it takes for businesses to succeed.
Businesses who have committed themselves to the DWP’s process will be recruiting creatively by:
- offering work trials to local benefit claimants
- liaising with Jobcentre Plus and the Learning Skills Council on pre-employment training, ensuring relevance to employers’ needs, and guaranteeing interviews or jobs to those who complete the training
- Reviewing application processes
