Health and Work

Is your job affecting your health?

Now we’ve eased ourselves into 2008, many of us will be making the same New Year resolutions we make every year. happy teamYou know – the ones about health, happiness and general wellbeing... But while many of us aim to achieve this by promising to stick to that diet or by joining a gym, how many of us actually consider whether it is our job which is good for us? How does work affect our health?

The answer is partially positive. Work can be excellent for health, depending on the employee, the job and the work environment. People in employment enjoy various positive boosts, ranging from more money to better health and increased self-confidence. A good working environment also allows for social interaction, bringing forth friendships, a sense of achievement, responsibility and satisfaction.

But work can also have a detrimental effect on our health, particularly where relationships between colleagues or managers are not healthy. A workplace with these kinds of traits is usually quite easy to recognise, and may have a high staff turnover, or high levels of absence.

Positive work environments, which create happy relationships between employees, colleagues and managers, generally produce motivated employees, who are therefore healthy. Such employees are enthusiastic about the company, provide excellent customer service, have less absence and are more committed to their jobs.

According to the Government's 'Choosing Health' White Paper, two million people suffer an illness which they believe has been caused or made worse by their jobs. This can take many different forms including stress, anxiety, back pain and depression.
