Achieve recognition in HR

Use our top five networking tips

The ability to connect with industry professionals is invaluable to success in the HR industry. Online industry websites and social networking sites provide an opportunity for you to connect with other industry professionals, but it's also essential to use professional networking events to interact with other executives on a personal level and to develop profitable relationships, both for your current and future career.

But not everyone is comfortable presenting themselves confidently to a room full of strangers. Which is why we're presenting you with our top five tips for effective networking.

Our top tips

Opportunities to network at dedicated networking events are legend, but most HR professionals are more likely to encounter their peers during the performance of their duties, at exhibitions, conferences, or meetings. Here are out top tips for getting the most out of your networking:

  1. Think ahead, and be prepared: Always be aware of potential prospects. Even if you’re happily employed, it doesn’t mean you should not network. Circumstances may change, or you may need contacts for other reasons, like recruitment for your own organisation. Keep your business cards handy, up-to-date and in an easily-accessible place
  2. Mingle effectively: At any networking event, there should be a varied amount of people to talk to, including key figures. However, others will also want to talk to the key figures attending. It's a good idea to be remembered for your presentation without monopolising their time.
  3. Broaden your focus: Should you be involved in a group discussion, it may be that you're only interested in networking with one person in the group. However, it pays to pay attention to everyone. You never know when something relevant to you will be mentioned.
  4. Research: Be aware of what you want to achieve by networking. This will help you to be more specific, and steer the conversation in the right direction for you, whether that’s scouting for an addition to your team, or finding out specific information about a company.
  5. Follow-up: Once you've done networking, keep in touch! If you use someone’s name to gain employement or take a suggestions on board it is worth letting the person know to say thank-you. This is especially important in an industry as specialised as HR - your contact will probably appear at most of the events you attend.
