NLP boosts communication
Have you noticed that when we communicate with another person we are only effective some of the time? Most people use Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques to help communicate effectively during interviews. Despite success in these encounters, we tend not to use it in everyday communication. Ceridian’s LifeWorks consultants think we should. Our EAP experts suggest that you can use Neuro-linguistic Programming on a day-to-day basis to help you understand how people communicate effectively, and add value to your own communication techniques.
The Components of NLP
The acronym 'NLP' derives from the three components that enable communication excellence.
- Neuro (the nervous system): We experience the world through our 5 senses, and we delete, distort and filter the data we receive.
- Linguistic: The words and verbal constructions we use to communicate our thoughts.
- Programming: the behavioural strategies we have created which we unconsciously invoke to perform tasks.
Popular NLP Techniques
We all have our preferred representational system, and matching another's is one way to build rapport.
We can match the language we use to suit another's preferred representation system.
We can match body positions and patterns of physical movement. By doing this knowingly, we can help increase our rapport with others
However people communicate, they create signals indicating their preferred representational system. If you’re interested in developing rapport with colleagues and clients, it will help to study and practice NLP to elicit their preferred system, and use this knowledge to communicate more effectively.
Making friends and influencing people
Communication with others is a vital factor in our success. Want to test the theory? Why not join us at the Ceridian Customer Network event, where you will have the opportunity to use NLP skills to communicate with other industry professionals more effectively.
The way we communicate with ourselves is also of vital importance to our emotional and psychological wellbeing. You can also use NLP beliefs and techniques for areas of personal development and stress reduction.
